On the road again.............your favourite spot ?

How many of you love to travel ? Where is your favourite place ? My hubby and I have taken many road trips, some long and others short. We love the opportunity to go to new places and soak in the folks and scenery.

We particularly love the central coast of California. There is something about the ocean and the rolling green hills(in the winter)  and sunshine that speaks to our souls.

Here are some of our favourite scenes from last year's trip. Enjoy !

Clearing out the cobwebs.....

I don't know about you but I can't function without that first cup of coffee of the day. It seems to clear out all the clutter and cobwebs from the night before.

I made a quirky abstract drawing of the clutter leaving my mind as the caffeine kicks in. The colour and textures in the background represent the clarity I hope to achieve .

What do you see there ?  Do you need your caffeine fix in the morning ?

Santa Fe .......a big surprise and delight

I  had  never visited Santa Fe until this winter when we were driving back from our trip to California.

In my mind I pictured an arid desert landscape with cacti and rocks. Imagine my surprise when I viewed the gorgeous mountains  and scenery. The air was so clear and fresh. I didn't realize that the Rio Grand River came that far north.

We were fortunate enough to have weather that was comfortable enough to visit the galleries, admire the architecture and sit outside at a cafe and soak it all in.

I took a series of shots of the intricate old doors that I came across. Here is the first in the series Doors of Santa Fe. I wanted to convey a mood of richness of colour and joy that I felt as I admired these old doors

Surreal Sunset..bold and exciting

Can you hear the swell of the waves ? Can you feel the warm salty air on your skin ? Have a look.

I snapped  many pictures of sunsets in Pismo Beach in February. We had many a high surf warning while we were there as well. I started with one of my ocean sunset photos adding a blur, texture and colour to create this surreal sunset.

I love the bold contemporary look of this design. Yet this also  calm restful image will give you many hours of visual delight.

Home Again - Missing home or wish you could stay?

When you go away for an extended period of time, how do you feel about returning home ?

We drove out to California to enjoy a holiday on the central coast for the month of February. The eight day drive there and back was phenomenal. The weather could not have been more spectacular.

I took so many pictures to either use as a painting reference or to create exciting digital work.

I was fascinated by the beautiful sunsets along the coastline. The first two images are taken right where we were living. No photo enhancements were applied.  Take a look.

The love of vivid colour and the dynamic silhouetted tree, inspired me to create Sunset Silhouette.  The saturated dynamic colours behind the silhouetted palm tree bring a sense of excitement and warmth to the scene.

Since it is snowing right now outside my window, this digital painting brings back the warmth of the air and the smell of the ocean in the evening. Oh to return. Next year perhaps.

Could you draw a sketch a day ....?

I have been participating in the #inktober challenge for October. I have done a fair number of sketches but am a little behind for the month. It is really hard to do a sketch a day. With me, it is not drawing  but deciding what I want to draw.

How many of you have tried a daily drawing or painting challenge ? What positive things came out of it or is it just the doing that is important ? I'd love to hear you thoughts in the comments section below.

Here is my sketch from yesterday. It is the gallery where I exhibit and sell my artwork. -Martello Alley. It is an unusual and very creative space. Visit their Facebook book page to see photos of what I mean : https://www.facebook.com/MartelloAlley

Fun with my #inktober drawings

I decided it would be fun to enter the #inktober challenge. I have completed a fair number of the sketches, but still need to catch up.

I wondered how I could take these pen and inks and use them as a starting point for a more creative piece of work.

Here are two of the pieces that I created. What do you think ? What direction would you have gone ?  Feel free to share your ideas in the comments section.

Wow .....these brushes are almost real

I have been experimenting with the new dynamic brushes in Painter 2016. In particular I have been using the brushes created by Jeremy Sutton of PaintboxTV. If you are a member of this site you not only get great tutorials and news about Painter but have access to the custom brushes that Jeremy creates.

I am impressed with the marks and expression I have with the dynamic brushes in particular.

Since pictures are worth a thousand words, here are my first two paintings created with these brushes. If you get a chance give them a try.
